Original, Reflectance, and Illumination

Tandent’s Trillien technology is transforming the way artists manipulate and use real world imagery to create game content and special effects for film. Trillien reverse engineers an image into the components that formed it: reflectance and illumination. Reflectance, or albedo, is the inherent color of the material, while the illumination is the light energy falling upon the surface. By separating an image into its two intrinsic components, Trillien gives artists and photographers unprecedented capabilities to manipulate the image as though they were manipulating the original scene.

Lightbrush is designed to give artists full control over the Trillien separation process. With Lightbrush, texture artists, content creators, and photographers can independently edit and manipulate the surface colors and the lighting of real-world imagery. This technology from the frontiers of computer vision enables modes of image editing previously possible only with rendered 3D graphics.

LIGHTBRUSH EXAMPLES

Lightbrush allows artists to capture texture maps from real images and to perform complex image manipulations with unprecedented ease.

TEXTURE CAPTURE

The reflectance map provides an illumination-free version of the texture which is appropriate for skinning on 3D models.  Capturing textures from real-world environments can involve waiting for just the right diffuse light, providing expensive artificial lighting, or spending hours dodging and burning images in post production.  With Lightbrush, texture artists can quickly remove all illumination variation from an image, making fast, physically-based content creation a reality.

COMPLEX IMAGE MANIPULATION

With independent access to illumination and reflectance, artists can manipulate an image as if they were manipulating the world.  Shadows can be relit or brightened while preserving the full richness of surface color contrast.  Shadow boundaries can be softened or redrawn.  Surfaces can change color while retaining accurate illumination variation.  The creative possibilities are limitless.

IS LIGHTBRUSH RIGHT FOR YOU?

Lightbrush is available now as a standalone application for MacOS X.  It can export TIFFs, EXRs, or a layered document for editing in another application. A Windows version will be available by the end of 2012.

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

OSX 10.6 or later
64-bit processor
4 GB of RAM (8 GB or 16 GB recommended)
Camera Raw Images*

*Lightbrush works best on the raw, full bit depth, linear data available in most native digital camera formats, including CR2, NEF, ARW, or ORF files.  Linear, high bit depth image data stored in EXR and TIFF files are also supported. Raw format images provide the most accurate measurements of the light reaching the camera sensor.  Camera systems perform proprietary tone adjustments when making jpeg images, applying gamma correction, saturation boosting, and other unspecified color modifications to enhance visual appeal.  These nonlinear adjustments violate the physical principles Lightbrush uses for its analysis.
